Description:

Calligraffiti - concept
Add some urban flavor to your calligraphy.

“Calligraffiti as traditional handwriting with a metropolitan attitude.“ - Niels Shoe Meulman

In a lot of graffiti one can see calligraphic influence. There is actually a whole style on it´s own - calligraffiti. Let´s find out more and get inspiration from this special branch of urban art. Calligraphic skill and know-how, the ideas of medieval illumination meets the freedom and spirit of graffiti. It´s about experimenting, using graffiti markers as a starting point for a whole new drawn lettering-style. Pushing boundaries and breaking rules - sounds like fun, doesn´t it?

From her work on blackboards and shop windows, Andrea has gained some experience in fast lettering, developing into her own unique style. There is no point in carefully executed letters, nobody would pay for it. Work has to be done quick, legible and good looking. In her letterforms, she is inspired from graffiti, tags and calligraffiti. For her own artwork she found that she could use those dynamic letterforms and transfer them into slower drawn designs. This urban flavor mixed with ideas of medieval illumination develops into exciting new projects.

Exercises in this class will be:

- writing and experimenting with a big size acrylic marker - adding speed & new strokes
- inspiration from examples of graffiti and calligraffiti
- introducing ideas such as cursive/leaning over to the left
- breaking classic letter shapes, introducing graffiti moves
- redrawing and refining letterforms
- landscape-illumination
- shadow, bubbles & what else you need for decoration

Level: All levels welcome
