Beyond Flourishes
A calligraphy workshop on layout and mindful decoration

In this workshop, the focus lies on creating calligraphic compositions: combining words into a harmonious design and adding flourishes that truly enhance the work. Starting with short, self-chosen text(s), we will move from pencil sketch to finished composition. Special attention will be given to developing flourishes and decorative elements as part of the whole. Proportion, line tension, distribution of white space, and the technical aspects of execution will be clarified through exercises.

We will work with short texts and your own choice of script styles (for example Roman Capitals and Minuscules, Uncial, Italic, Carolingian, Fraktur, Textura…). Participants will create sketches and then execute them on high-quality paper of their choice, using watercolor, ink, or gouache. Each participant will receive individual guidance with the text and letterforms they wish to explore.
