Description:

Family Trees

How Does Your Family Chart Grow: Know Your Roots, Branches, and Leaves

Student Level: All

Family tree charts often suffer the same fate that Art History does: that they are merely collections of dates, places, and names. We, as calligraphers, become the storyteller, a designer of navigation, a cartographer of unfamiliar times and locations, a researcher, an observer of trends, an historian, a connector of patterns, an organizer, a gardener pruning and directing branches of a family—all leading to a singular result of being the artist and scribe that narrates this story.

The instructor will introduce what she believes is the best book written on how to structure a chart: Family Trees: A Manual for Their Design, Layout & Display, by Marie Lynskey. Though out-of-print, this book outlines simple, yet well thought-out architecture and thorough troubleshooting methods—a no-nonsense approach that will enable anyone to hit the ground running in both researching and rendering an artistic chart. There will be discussions on the handling of complex occurrences such as multiple marriages, intergenerational marriages, divorce, adoptions, and name changes resulting from emigrations.
