Bold Conjuring Essence in Line and Color: Developing Word as Image

What lies beyond our immediate reach, knowledge and comprehension that we can conjure into transformative energy? Highway or labyrinth, the mystery of that which is “just beyond” the visible holds rich potential. I revel in experimental image-making, based on writing, and invite you to journey with me. Familiar and “new” tools we make will offer endless options along the way.

Tapping into individual experience as calligraphers, we will use your rich vocabulary of shapes and forms as a foundation. Experimentation will take your “writing” to a new dimension. Using sumi, acrylics and color media, we will consider and “record” the essence of a word or experiment with a single letter. Bring an open mind and a spirit of adventure to this weekend workshop, as we work large on paper, that will become a book. A simple non-sewn binding will transform your sheets into a variation of a drum-leaf binding.

A pre-class assignment will be sent to students 4-6 weeks before the class.

Materials:
Paper for all exercises, end sheets and sized cover papers will be provided, as well as a selection of other materials for experimentation to create a myriad of effects. All of this is included in the $30-35 supply fee which will be payable at the workshop. Students need bring some fave and unusual tools, sumi ink and a few tools for book making. A more detailed list will be sent to those enrolled in the class.
