Abstraction (from the Latin abs, meaning away from and trahere, meaning to draw) is the process of taking away or removing characteristics from something in order to reduce it to a set of essential characteristics.

As a calligrapher, letterform abstraction is the process of removing characteristic details of letterforms and focusing on drawing and writing with the core of the form and with rhythm and movement. I also have been attempting to abstract the meaning of text into my creation. In this workshop, we will focus on making textures by writing no legible text, something that an audience can feel, not read or understand.

In the first half of the workshop, we will start by designing our own monoline letterform to suit the meaning of our chosen text, and then we will experiment with abstracting those forms while making calligraphic textures. We will also test different writing tools and found objects to suit our own form to be written and drawn. On the second half of the workshop, we will work with the part of the texture we made to develop graphical abstract elements with different scale, with negative/positive, and with different shapes and values.

If time allows, we will make several experimental abstract calligraphic pieces, and will bind exercise sheets in a book form.
