Coptic sewing may sound ancient and mysterious, but it is a highly contemporary choice for today’s handcraft bookbinding despite its age. Dating back to the second century AD, this classic binding features a beautiful decorative chain stitch sewn across the spine. It is an excellent choice for journals and sketch books because it opens completely flat despite its multiple signatures.  Coptic binding is completed without any glue or adhesives, and allows the creative book artist many opportunities to incorporate non-traditional materials or found object covers into the design.

There are many types of coptic sewing; we will concentrate on the two needle coptic sewn across the spine, using curved needles for sewing. We’ll remove the mystery from this binding with lots of practice: three books will be completed during the workshop. On Day 1, we will sew two small models from supplied kits to master stitching sequence, thread tension, and adding covers. On Day 2, we will explore the use of less traditional cover materials and create a unique book from materials that you supply or from a variety of kits available to purchase in the classroom. Throughout the workshop, we will also explore options to add more color and interest to the spine of books bound with coptic stitching, as well as the use of simple equipment that will give your hand bound books a professional appearance.

Illustrated handouts with step-by-step sewing instructions are included.
