This is an opportunity to study copperplate in an extended workshop which will be presented in two sessions, each a month apart, with homework assigned between sessions.

Session 1 – Copperplate : The Basics

In this class, students will begin with the fundamentals including a step by step instruction of the basic strokes, the miniscules, the capitals and the numbers. Emphasis will be on using proper form, slant and spacing. The next step will have students work on developing this beautiful hand into short quotes and blocks of text. Demonstrations and discussions on the best nibs, inks and papers to use, working for reproduction, flourishing and hints for doing envelope work will all be presented.

Session 2 – Copperplate: Beyond the Basics

Once the basics of this distinctive hand have been covered the next step is to expand our ideas of what Copperplate should look like. We will decide between keeping those things which are characteristic of a traditional Copperplate and pushing the limits of how much we can change shape, slant, spacing, size, proportion, weight and texture and still maintain a Copperplate “look”. Further experimentation will include variations of the capitals, ascenders and descenders, flourishing and working with non-traditional layouts, materials and techniques. Lastly, students will combine all that’s been learned in both sessions into a final finished piece.

Students will be expected to complete two homework assignments between sessions. One will be emailed to me mid-month which will be evaluated and emailed back to the student. Then, based on the first evaluated piece, another assignment will be completed to bring to the second session.

Although some experience with the pointed pen is preferred, these classes are good for the beginner as well as those with experience looking to improve their skills.
