Sketching in Letters, Lines and Images

“See the world, one sketch at a time!” is my motto. Indeed, I have spent the better part of the last ten years offering “On the Go Sketching & Calligraphy” classes both locally and abroad. The aim is to help calligraphers learn to sketch and use calligraphy more informally, and to help sketch artists learn calligraphy fundamentals so they can incorporate text in their sketchbooks. Inspired by UK Artist Karen Stamper’s approach to sketchbooks, I will offer some of the simple techniques she uses in her wonderful accordion books.

In this workshop the emphasis will be on integrating sketched, painted or collaged images with handwriting and lettering to create lively, beautiful and uniquely personal pages in an accordion book. How? Class exercises will include gesture and contour drawing, Sketching basics, as well as simple acrylic ink or watercolor and collage techniques—all of which will be integrated into the book. A lettering component will include handwriting as well as modifying (personalizing) a cursive italic. No prior drawing experience? No problem! This class is meant for all levels. The main emphasis will be on experimenting with an “on the go” informal approach to sketching, calligraphy and composition, using what we already know, and trying out some new techniques. If the venue permits, we may go outside for a foray in sketching and nature inspiration.

At a glance: On the Go sketching, informal calligraphy

Topics covered: Composition, basic drawing, handwriting and personalizing formal scripts, collage

All levels of experience welcome.
