In this class, we will begin with a review of the basic strokes, the miniscules and the capitals. Emphasis will be on using proper form, slant and spacing. Once the basics have been covered the next step is to expend our ideas of what Copperplate should look like. We will decide between keeping those things which are characteristic of a traditional Copperplate and pushing the limits of how much we can change shape, slant, spacing, size, proportion, weight and texture and still maintain a Copperplate “look”. Further experimentation will include variations of the capitals, ascenders and descenders, flourishing and working with non-traditional layouts, materials and techniques.
