The Roman Capital | The DNA of letters

A week of intensive study and practice of capitals: Brush | over 2 weekends

The capital is perhaps the most versatile form for both solid and graceful design and/or providing seeds for further exploration. We will enjoy 2 days, followed by a week to practice and then reconvene the following weekend to further hone our skills and develop with critique/discussion.

We examine the capital letter carefully; first for the pure classic forms and brush discipline and then as a theme, focusing our skills and expressive possibilities; concluding with ways to extract what we need in our creative work. We will build from both brush-strokes and with mono-line, getting the best forms into our hands and soul. We will work toward building confidence and rhythm while introducing subtle modifications, learning what is essential and what is variable.

This workshop is a deep exploration of structure, of details, and of mindful practice. Students will also be encouraged to explore the elements of form, rhythm, & movement; building skills, developing technique and raising awareness to the highest standards in letter arts. Beyond formal precise technique, loose exercises that maintain the quality of form and the understanding of rhythm will be introduced, to keep us fresh.

Capitals are a foundation; a hub that can have many spokes (directions) to explore, making this topic not an end, but rather a means to new possibilities and a finer sense of the subtleties of form (which can apply to any tool or letterform). To understand how these capitals are made and how they go together helps us with every aspect of calligraphy and lettering while building our confidence in brush handling techniques.
