JOHN STEVENS : TWO LINES INTERACTING

A four-day workshop retreat for the Chicago Calligraphy Collective

This class is a systematic approach to improve our ability to see, to create and to build our intuition and confidence. Through spontaneous brush compositions we learn to design from the right side of our brain (instead of overthinking and rationalizations). Basically.… freedom.

  1. Experimentation, play, risk and spontaneity. We value these attributes for the life and freshness when reflected in our work.

  2. Study, copying exemplars, analyzing and rote practice; we value these to learn form, repeatable technique and history.

Most calligraphers today rely too heavily on the second (copying exemplars), and oftentimes find a gap in their journey from making letters to creating a finished work. However, we must learn to develop and rely on our design instincts and really “see” what is happening on the page (and the ability to evaluate what we see without judgment) if we are to evolve.

In this class we will work with the brush* on developing our spontaneous design approach and responding (rather than analyzing) in a low-risk, non-judgmental environment. This new awareness or sensitivity will ultimately help all of our work and balance our reliance on looking at external sources (like someone else’s work). Confidence with the brush is also a benefit.

(*You can be a brush beginner or expert in this class. However, this workshop is not for beginner calligraphers.)

Placement and layout of our letters and design elements on the page is at least as important as letters themselves.

Practice, exploration, and making a composition balances against our analytical, letter-constructing-left brain (and helps balance both sides of the brain).

If we are lucky, we will have a book by the end of the workshop.
