European writing before the 15th Century is filled with dynamic vitality. All these letters were written with a bird's feather! Making and writing with quill and reed pens: preparation of the pen knife, (including Edward Cocker's instructions); 'curing' the quills; cutting and refining the writing edge; and how the tool defines the form of the manuscript letter. Many observations and experiments with the tool making Medieval forms, and special attention on how to analyse any hand (ancient or not!) using Edward Johnston's "Seven Rules for Copying a Manuscript."

45-minute 'working' lunch 12:15-1pm. I recommend that people bring lunch, or we can order something to be delivered.

Workshop fee includes quills, reeds, papers and off-cut vellum. A correctly sharpened Quill Cutting Knife can be purchased from my shop https://www.etsy.com/shop/amindfulmark

We will discuss the sharpening of the quill knife, but there is not enough time in a two-day workshop for everyone to correctly regrind their own.
